Ohio Rail - A History Of The Route

Ohio Rail was originally released in early 2002. Development began back in late November of 2001 but was interrupted because I wrote the DEM tutorial (no longer available). Ohio Rail underwent three versions with the last one being referred to as Build 10. A fourth version, Build 11, was half way completed when several issues forced a work stoppage. During construction of Build 11 of Ohio Rail my interest in building my own structures were piqued and in the process I noticed structures built to scale and the use of better textures resulted in a realistic look in scenery which better complimented the rollingstock.

Originally available from three sites I eventually narrowed access of Ohio Rail to just AVSIM.COM where it currently resides. Primarily a flight sim forum, AVSIM also caters to other hobbies as well, including trains. The best way to find Ohio Rail and its supplemental files is to register with AVSIM and then go to the File Library and do a search on either garber or Ohio Rail.

Conceptually, Ohio Rail begins with two railroads competing against each other, the WV&O and the OR&W. Spelled out they are the West Virginian And Ohio Railroad and the Ohio River and Western Railroad. In actuality the WV&O is the B&O and the OR&W is a combination of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the real Ohio River And Western Railroad. Ohio Rail like my other routes borrow from decades of railroading and are not focused to a single point in time. To get the best enjoyment from Ohio Rail you will want to consult the large 32 page manual found in the Media folder of Ohio Rail. There you will also find Don Hughe's updated schematics for the Ohio Rail Upgrade.

Set mostly in the transitional period, Ohio Rail is perfect for steam and diesel engines. If you prefer mainline running, the WV&O is for you. If you like a more mountainous rugged journey then consider the OR&W. And if switching is your pleasure, just about any kind of industry you can imagine is represented from refineries, coal, steel, logging, grain, etc. etc., on the Ohio Rail route.

At AVSIM you will notice there are many rollingstock packages available for Ohio Rail. Because of this I was compelled to write a manual of sorts to explain the differences. It seems a good idea to re-release this manual but please keep in mind this manual is from 2002! It covers many issues of Ohio Rail including installation, the add-ons, and even how to find the files at AVSIM. Download the tutorial here.
